The theme for Runway 10 is Remember Imagine, which encourages everyone to look at the past and remember where we started, so we are able to look towards the future and what we can achieve. Leading up to the show, we will be focusing in on each of our senior designers and learning about the road that lead them to where they are now. The first designer we will be spotlighting on is Angela Harrison.
Growing up, Angela was the classic tomboy; she loved to get dirty in the mud with her older brother, Billy, and her boy cousins. She grew up in a very family oriented household that was also very creative and smart. Her father is a big influencer in art and music, whereas her mother is an influencer of business intelligence. Her family is composed of an older sister named Jacque, a younger sister named Pamela, an older brother named Billy, and an older, adopted brother named Keith, all who have been major influencers in Angela’s desire to be a designer.
When Angela was around the age of nine, her sister Jacque would draw sketches of girls with clothes on for fun. Angela always thought it was so amazing, and would try to draw
similar pictures, but wasn’t that good of an artist at the time. Angela’s other sister, Pamela, exceled at painting and drawing. Although she had no interest in it at the time, Angela looked up to her sisters for their talent and admired all their work. Her brother, Billy, was also a musician. With talent running in the family, it’s no surprise that Angela became a fashion designer.
When she was in 9th grade, Angela was struck by lightening while walking a path near her high school. It was an indirect hit, that went through the umbrella, through her hand, arm, and exited out her sneakers, which saved her life. That day changed Angela’s life. It made her think more about who she was, and who she wanted to be.
The accident left Angela with permanent nerve damage. Immediately following the event, she wasn’t able to write because of the numbness and tingling sensation in her right arm and hand. Her high school was not willing to accommodations, so Angela was homeschooled by her mother from 9th to 11th grade. Being homeschooled was hard on her, because she was never able to go out or see her friends. So every time Angela was able to go somewhere, she would spend hours doing her makeup and picking out the perfect outfit. It is during this time that she got into fashion, and earned the nickname ‘Diva.’ When her senior year rolled around, Angela went back to her old high school, where she was able to go to prom and walk the stage at graduation with her classmates.
The inspiration for Angela’s collection came from her past experiences. Past artwork that she made while getting her associates degree at Onondaga Community College was used in her designs. The collection, Ink-Synk, has many elements of designs and paint strokes made by black India ink. The composition includes different repeats that are fluid and harmonious.
Angela loves everything about fashion and art, and always finds it fun to make clothes. When asked about a mistake she’s made as a designer, Angels recalls the time she was sewing a white skirt and ended up sewing her thumb. It started to bleed, and got onto her fabric. But like any true designer, Angela was more concerned about her no-longer-white fabric than she was about her finger.
