The theme for Runway 10 is Remember Imagine, which encourages everyone to look at the past and remember where we started, so we are able to look towards the future and what we can achieve. Leading up to the show, we will be focusing in on each of our senior designers and learning about the road that lead them to where they are now. The next senior designer we will be spotlighting is Melissa McClurg.
Melissa was around the age of 12 when she decided that she wanted to become a designer. Her and her cousin had planned everything out, there were going to start their own line and call it Mc & Mac, based off their last names, McClurg and MacIntyre. Melissa likes to joke about calling her cousin up and seeing if she’s still up to do their line.
For Runway 10, Melissa’s collection is influenced by 1920s designs in clothing, art, and architecture. Her biggest focus for the clothes in this line is pleating. She hopes that by adding it to different areas of the body, she’ll be able to create more visual interest.
Whenever trying out something new in her designs, Melissa finds it challenging to figure out how to get things to go together well. There’s a lot of trial and error that comes along with new techniques, but Melissa finds the feeling when everything comes together to be the best.
