Senior Spotlight: Ashton Warner

The theme for Runway 10 is Remember Imagine, which encourages everyone to look at the past and remember where we started, so we are able to look towards the future and what we can achieve. Leading up to the show, we will be focusing in on each of our senior designers and learning about the road that lead them to where they are now. The next senior designer we will be spotlighting is Ashton Warner.

Ashton has always been interested in fashion, and has always known that she wanted to have a career in it. It wasn’t until she saw Alexander McQueen’s Savage Beauty at the Met in New York that she truly understood the motivation and craftsmanship that it took to be a designer.

For Runway 10, Ashton’s collection is called Slocum, which is inspired by the 1904 shipwreck along the East River. The PS General Slocum was a steamship that caught on fire during a time where no one was trained in fire safety. The ship went up in flames, and thousands of people died by either burning on board or jumping off and drowning. Aston decided to take something that was so tragic and forgotten in history, and bring light to it and memorialize the story. Everything in her collection will be white, and will tell the story of the wreck as the line progresses. Ashton is even burning the edges of her silk chiffon to get a charring effect.

The hardest part of her collection thus far has been explaining the concept to people. Most people think that creating a line inspired by a massive tragedy is crazy. Also, explaining how she is charring her fabric has also proved difficult. Luckily for Ashton, it’s been working really well, and there haven’t been any accidents yet!
