Carla knew that she wanted to become a fashion designer ever since she first picked up a pencil. The first thing that she knew how to draw were dresses. However, she wasn’t sure how smart of a career choice fashion would be, so she kept designing, sewing, and knitting as just a hobby. It wasn’t until two years ago that Carla decided to just go for it and really pursue fashion.

Carla ChoudharyCarla’s collection for this Runway is called “Creative Origins,” and it is based on the idea of piecing fabric together into multiple panels to create clothing. This is different from the normal way of making clothes, which is made in two pieces, a front and a back. She has designed and printed two of the fabrics that she’ll be using, and is also hand knitting some pieces and embellishments. Carla is excited that that fabric printing and knitting has given her the ability to really design the textiles and silhouettes in her collection.Carla Choudhary 3

One thing that Carla has found to be challenging is making her collection cohesive. She
has many ideas, and finds it hard to choose one without doubting if it was the best choice. Another thing that Carla finds to be challenging  is getting the perfect balance of cohesion; to make all the pieces look like they are expressing the same idea while also not making four of the same dresses and having the collection come off as dull and passé.

Tickets for the show are now available here http://runway.buffalostate.edu

Interview: Senior Designer Faith Scheffer

Faith Scheffer from the fashion/textile design technologies concentration has created a senior digital fabric design collection in addition to engineered garment designs  for Runway 5.0. She developed four silk yardages that will be wrapped into sarongs for her Runway scene, she also developed surface patterns for two engineered garment designs. Arkeida Wilson collaborated with her for garment pattern development and  garment construction. -Elaine Polvinen

RW: Tell us a little about yourself:

FS: I am from the city of Rochester (town of Spencerport), New York. I am 20 years old and a junior at buff state. I have always loved everything to do with the arts (drawing, painting, theater [i have been in 3 summer musicals] music [voice and instrument lessons] dance, and of course fashion).

RW: Why did you choose Buffalo State College to start your fashion career?

FS: I chose Buffalo State College because I love that it is close to home (I like being able to make the short trip home over breaks and on weekends during my college years) and has a great fashion program.

RW: How have you developed as a designer since starting Buffalo State?

FS: I definitely believe that I have developed as a designer since coming to Buffalo State. My main focus is Fashion CAD, and I have learned so much about the new technologies available to us today and the ways we can create beautiful works of art using apparel as our canvas.

RW: What is your inspiration for Runway 5.0?

FS: My inspiration for my Runway 5.0 collection is drawn from Hawaii. I have taken different elements of this dream destination (water life, flora, and volcanoes) and used them to create bright pieces that showcase the beauty of the tropical state.

RW: What your plans for the future?

FS: My plans for the future have changed many times, but as of now I think I’ve found an area that suits me best. I am hoping to find a CAD job in the area of textile design.

RW: Who is your designer or style icon?

FS: I really admire Oscar de la Renta as a designer, his dresses are always so gorgeous, and I am obsessed with Rachel Zoe and her styling abilities. Both, as designer and stylist, never cease to amaze me.

Interview with Kathryn Jakubowski: Senior Designer for Runway 5.0

Runway is nothing without their Senior Designer collections…this post we will be interviewing Kathryn Jakubowski, a prospective Senior Designer for Runway 5.0!

RW: Tell me a little about yourself (where you are from, age, hobbies):

KJ: I’m 21, from Buffalo, New York. I love to design and sew, travel, go on adventures with my boyfriend, and hang out with friends. Oh and gaze at pictures of pug puppies, I may have a small obsession with their cuteness!

RW: Why did you ultimately pick Buffalo State College to kick-start your fashion career?
KJ: Design is a career path I’ve always wanted to take, and I applied to a few different schools in and outside of the area. Buffalo State felt natural, and I loved the program from the start.

RW: How have you developed as a designer since you entered BSC?
KJ: I’ve developed immensely. When I began college, I didn’t even know how to sew properly! Here at school I learned the necessary skills to technically create garments, as well as how to approach and fully understand ideas to turn them into creative concepts. I took the opportunity to study abroad in Manchester, England, and MMU has been an amazing university to attend in conjunction with BSC.

RW: Where have you drawn your inspiration from for you Runway 5.0 collection?
KJ: I played around with the theme idea of synthesis, and tried to combine that with the nostalgic explanations provided in WGSN’s “Cinematic” Trend forecast. The essence of nostalgia is time, so I started looking at daytime or nighttime photography with vintage effects. I ultimately reached a day vs. the night theme, visually explaining the unity between the productive and work-oriented nature of day contrasting with the romance and adventure of night, a cycle that provides a unified balance and perfect harmony in our lives.

RW: Where do you plan on taking your fashion career in the future?
KJ: I have sooo many ideas! I’ve had the travel bug after studying in England, and I would love to spend some time in different cities around the world. New York City has my heart. I plan to move there at some point after graduation, to begin my life as a designer perhaps freelancing for a few companies and begin working my way up. Ultimately I would love to have my own label partnered with my sister! She went to school for fashion as well!

RW: Who is your designer or style icon?
KJ: A few designers/labels are Alexander Mcqueen, Elizabeth and James, Band of Outsiders, Mulberry, and lingerie duo The Lake and Stars. As far as style icons, I would say I always gravitate towards classic fifties icons and as of lately, Rooney Mara, I love everything she has been wearing!

Come see Kathryn April 21st at Runway 5.0! Tickets are now on sale! You can purchase your tickets for both shows at two locations; Rockwell Hall at Buffalo State College, or through any WNY Wegmans.
