Another Special Thank You…

To Martha Chery…aka “Cheri Marie”! Martha was our model choreographer for this year’s Runway 5.0! We recently interviewed her for her thoughts on this year’s Runway.

RW: What was your role in Runway 5.0?

CM: Runway Model Choreographer/Model Whisperer

RW: What were your thoughts on the models this year?
CM: The models were like my babies and seeing them transform into runway divas made me feel like a proud mama!

My three rules to transformation:
1: Shoulders back until it feels funny!
2: Head and eyes straight ahead!
3: Pretend that the camera is boyfriend/girlfriend!

RW: What did you like about Runway, especially this year?:

CM: I’ve been with Runway since 2.0 and every year it gets bigger and better! The light projection show at the start of 5.0 was AMAZING! The rap performance and collaboration with New Era and VitaminWater were a great addition too the show as well. As a graduating senior this my last runway show an I couldn’t have asked for anything more!

RW: What are your thoughts on the winning designer?

CM: I’m so happy that Kathryn won! We studied abroad together and I saw firsthand the hard work she put into her collection from start to finish. She deserved it!

RW: Who would you like to say thank you to?
CM: I want to thank Erin Habes for letting me be a part of this RUNWAY legacy and for being an amazing mentor.
I want to thank the entire production class and volunteers for making sure the ins and outs of the show ran smoothly.
And also to all of my models who took the time to work the runway and the hair and makeup teams that made them beautiful.

Once again, thank you to Martha for her amazing work in this year’s Runway! If you would like to contact her, click here for her link to Facebook.

Interview: Senior Designer Faith Scheffer

Faith Scheffer from the fashion/textile design technologies concentration has created a senior digital fabric design collection in addition to engineered garment designs  for Runway 5.0. She developed four silk yardages that will be wrapped into sarongs for her Runway scene, she also developed surface patterns for two engineered garment designs. Arkeida Wilson collaborated with her for garment pattern development and  garment construction. -Elaine Polvinen

RW: Tell us a little about yourself:

FS: I am from the city of Rochester (town of Spencerport), New York. I am 20 years old and a junior at buff state. I have always loved everything to do with the arts (drawing, painting, theater [i have been in 3 summer musicals] music [voice and instrument lessons] dance, and of course fashion).

RW: Why did you choose Buffalo State College to start your fashion career?

FS: I chose Buffalo State College because I love that it is close to home (I like being able to make the short trip home over breaks and on weekends during my college years) and has a great fashion program.

RW: How have you developed as a designer since starting Buffalo State?

FS: I definitely believe that I have developed as a designer since coming to Buffalo State. My main focus is Fashion CAD, and I have learned so much about the new technologies available to us today and the ways we can create beautiful works of art using apparel as our canvas.

RW: What is your inspiration for Runway 5.0?

FS: My inspiration for my Runway 5.0 collection is drawn from Hawaii. I have taken different elements of this dream destination (water life, flora, and volcanoes) and used them to create bright pieces that showcase the beauty of the tropical state.

RW: What your plans for the future?

FS: My plans for the future have changed many times, but as of now I think I’ve found an area that suits me best. I am hoping to find a CAD job in the area of textile design.

RW: Who is your designer or style icon?

FS: I really admire Oscar de la Renta as a designer, his dresses are always so gorgeous, and I am obsessed with Rachel Zoe and her styling abilities. Both, as designer and stylist, never cease to amaze me.

Interview: Senior Designer Alana Fogel

Runway 5.0 is TOMORROW! The designers are preparing their last minute touches to their garments, and the production team is setting up an amazing venue at the Pierce Arrow Building. One of the senior designers, Alana Fogel, tells us a little about her collection, as well as her journey into becoming a designer.

RW: Tell me a little about yourself (where you are from, age, hobbies)?

AF: So im 22 years old, born in Brooklyn, and currently living on Long Island. I am a drummer, a huge New York Rangers fan, a radio talk show host and a movie enthausist.

RW: Why did you ultimately pick Buffalo State College to kick-start your fashion career?

AF: Buffalo State sort of picked me. I was accepted as a freshman but chose another school and hated it. Which lead me to my transfer as a sophmore to Buffalo and now I will be finishing my degree from here.

RW: How have you developed as a designer since you entered BSC?

AF: I know the growing process is still occuring and will be noticed more when I am working in my future.

RW: Where have you drawn your inspiration from for you Runway 5.0 collection?

AF: My inspiration for my collection was 1940’s war movies. I love history and movies and the 40’s was a time period I didn’t get a chance to review the fashion and I wanted to bring something old and turn it modern – for a sophisticated woman.

RW: Where do you plan on taking your fashion career in the future?
AF: I aspire to have a bridal gown company that turns global. I would be interested in special occasion as well, but wedding gowns has always been my passion.

RW: Who is your designer or style icon?

AF: To pick just one icon would just be cruel. I love everything from Betsey Johnson to Oscar De La Renta.

Interview: Single-Item Designer Elizabeth Knights

The Single-Item Collection this year at Runway 5.0 features an incredible array of pieces designed by Buffalo State College students from a variety of majors and backgrounds. We recently interviewed Elizabeth Knights, a freshman at Buffalo State College, to learn about her journey and plans for the future, along with her inspiration for Runway 5.0!

RW: Tell me a little about yourself (where you are from, age, hobbies)?

EK: My name is Elizabeth Knights,  I am from a small town called Dansville, New York about an hour and a half south east of Buffalo. I am 18 years old and a freshman at Buffalo State College. My hobbies include photography, fishing, thrifting, camping, and rust printing (which you will see in my garment in Runway). I am a “well-rounded” person and I enjoy many types of activities, I am always up for new ones as well. But I primarily spend most of my time with classes, working, keeping my grades up, and creating garments for shows.

RW: Why did you ultimately pick Buffalo State College to kick-start your fashion career?

EK: Being from a very small town I thought Buffalo would be a good step before going to NYC to study. I chose Buffalo State College because a former student from my old high school encouraged me with her success story and explained how Buffalo State prepared her for the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. I also found that this school has a great level of diversity, and being from a small town, I thought it would be good for me to experience different types of people, and would contribute to life lessons!

RW: How have you developed as a designer since you entered BSC?

EK: Though I am just a freshman, I still have grown as a designer. I feel that because I have done three shows, including Runway for my freshman year, I have found how much time and effort it truly takes to create a line! I think that the shows really gave me confidence as a skill more then anything. I have been told that “city kids” have a greater opportunity in the fashion world versus small town people like myself. Now I see  that it’s not where you’re from , but where  your talent will take you. As a designer you need confidence in your work, and this year has brought me that!

RW: Where have you drawn your inspiration from for you Runway 5.0 collection?

EK: I chose the category of Primal Vs. Futuristic. When I thought of these two, I thought of rust printing, a printing process that my art teacher Ms. Traynor taught me.  Rust printing is exactly what it sounds like, you literally make prints with rusty objects. The prints are experimental and always turn out different, which is why I love it so much! I used this print to portray the primal aspect of the piece because of the browns, tans and “earthy” colors that are created while rust printing. When I thought of futuristic I thought of shiny metallic colors. I incorporated this as well into my piece.

RW: Where do you plan on taking your fashion career in the future?

EK: Because I am a freshman Im unaware of where I see myself in the future.  I just hope to stay on track here at Buffalo State College and transfer in a few years to the Fashion Institute of Technology where I can fulfill and plan the rest of my journey!

RW: Who is your designer or style icon?

EK: My designer icon is junior designer Danny Ramon Marcelino, a current student at Buffalo State College. He is a great inspiration and motivator and has encouraged me throughout my entire freshman year to participate in Runway! He told me that he knows so many designers who wish they had started young, this is why he pushed me to start as a freshman. Not only is he a great successful inspiration to me, but he is a great designer and knows what he is doing. I love that Danny is such a “well-rounded” type of person, you can tell within his work and with how he interacts with people. I could go on and on about how much I love him, but at the end of the day he truly is the one who pushed me to audition for Runway! Thank You Danny!

Come see Elizabeth this Saturday  at Runway 5.0! Tickets are on sale! You can purchase your tickets for both shows at two locations; Rockwell Hall at Buffalo State College, or through any WNY Wegmans!
